I am from Wisconsin and I just got a rescue puppy, Loki, that is 14 weeks old 4 days ago. He is likely husky or husky mix. My family is in love with the lil guy already.

He gets a spunk every now and then and a little tug of war can calm him down and he gets 2 very short walks a day (will get longer as he can do more and turn to jogging/biking). But, does it take awhile for huskies to get all this energy in comparison to other dogs?

I have a higher energy shepherd mix and honestly at this age she was bouncing off the walls in comparison to him from what I remember and I know I was able to meet her needs (she is 11 now). He reminds me of my lab as a puppy who turned out to be a very calm dog his whole life and still now at 11. My vet also gave him a clean bill of health and commented on how mellow he was for his age, so he isn't sick. My neighbor who does agility said the same thing - such a calm little guy.

I guess just reading online about all these poor huskies that end up surrendered, I want to make sure he never becomes one. I feel great about him now. But, I'm confused since he doesn't seem to have much energy and I'm scared he is just going to change or something based on things said online. Also, I have cats, but he is already getting better (still chases them - but less and less and I know it took my other puppies awhile to socialize them). Not sure if I will ever leave him out of his crate with my cats (took years for other dogs), but it seems having us all live in harmony while I am at home is completely possible though the upstairs is off limits to him now while potty and cat training is taking place.

So, I am here to learn and hear from real husky owners. I know bengal cat groups helped me a lot when I got bengal cats as rescues, so hoping this will too. Right now I think the only issues I'm having is working with him on come and getting him to play frisbee/fetch. Besides me leaving, I haven't found what really gets him going to get him to consistently come to me. And even after watching me play fetch/frisbee with my other dog, he kind of just lays there and watches.

Welcome to the forum! I'm sure you'll do fine with your little guy, my Yuki was very lazy as a puppy and is very lazy even now, shes about 11 months old. Some say at about 6-12 months they hit a teenage stage though and become balls of energy, so I guess its a wait and see game haha. We would love to see pictures of Loki!

Thanks!  As I read more here, it does seem things should be fine.  I think he may be on calmer husky side, but around or below my Shepherd mix energy wise. He has husky looks and seems about the right size at 25lbs and 14 weeks, just not sure if he is full husky or not. His coat seems shorter then a lot of other pictures, so I'm thinking he will just have shorter really dense coat as he gets older. Guess we will see.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one with a "calm" pup! I work at a pet resort where we have doggie daycare, and Aroo goes with me every day. Maybe that's why he's so calm!!

Welcome! I have a fairly calm husky, he's been that way every since we got him as a puppy and he's over a year now. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop!

Welcome.. I have to adult huskies about 3 year each and one is very hyper and the other is some what calmer it just depends on the dog.. I think..

I am blessed with 2 calm huskies, one more than the other for sure. I've noticed they're calm when they want to be but that all goes away when we start running. They'll have endurance forever! A husky is still a husky, be glad you have a calm one!

Sounds like it is possible to have mellow husky.

Still seems calmer, so glad to hear he should still have endurance as I would like to get back to doing more with my dog outdoors. Kind of stopped with dogs as my female lost energy and when her epilepsy was bad since outdoors set her off.  My lab was always mellow, but lacked endurance too.

Can you see these pictures? Rescue and vet both indicated he is likely good amount husky if not full. Was thinking he may have some white shepherd in him, but neighbor reminded me his ears are too perky. His hair seems shorter, but still somewhat plushy. Sounds like some huskies can have shorter hair though and it will get a lot more dense as he gets older. Does he look husky?

Looks husky to me.. Huskies do have a lot of different length of hair. my two have different hair.

Just 3 dogs, the other 2 are my cats.

Here's Dom and Lexi.  Dom is almost 12 yr old lab and he is 100+ lbs (105 when he is at good weight)/28" at withers.  He is my big boy.


Here's Lexi by herself.  She is just over 11.  Not exactly sure what she is but most see good amount of shepherd.  I got her as puppy at humane society listed as doberman/lab mix.  She was my smaller dog at 70-75lbs.  Now looks like Loki will be smaller one as I don't see him getting close to 70+ lbs.  Funny the more I read on huskies, the more I think she may have a little husky tucked away in her too.  


Got Loki as Dom is getting older and so is Lexi.  Loki has seeminly perked Lexi up as she as a lot more spunk again with him in the house now.  Dom kind of just relaxes and his walks are down to once around small city block.

Loki looks like he could have some shepherd in him. Something about his face is screaming shepherd at me, he has a facial structure like our past GSD. He's adorable, pure or not!  

Looks husky to me! Sometimes their hair doesn't really come in until they are older. Pongo really didn't have a good fluff until he was around 2 years. Also it can be shorter in the summer and thicker in the winter At times I see white huskies that don't have as much hair as other colors for some reason. Beautiful pup

I kept thinking the same thing that there may be some shepherd in him. I think it will be easier to tell as he gets older - my lexi afterall was listed as doberman mix as puppy. As adult I see no doberman.

We kind of like the whites with the shorter really dense hair, so hoping he grows up to look more like them. I found one site that shows pictures of huskies and one white pup in particular that looks just like Loki. It has the owners email, so was going to email and see if they could send me adult pictures of the dog now. Just to see.

I am really freaked out by the escape abilities of these dogs and the huge craters they dig. Is it really only a matter of time before they escape?

Your pups are very cute!

My family's last husky was an escape artist extrordinaire.  Here's what we learned:

Be extra careful about closing doors and gates that lead to the outside world.  As for digging, at our old house my dad put chicken wire on the ground near the fence to keep our husky from digging out.  Also, check to see if any of your latches or door knobs are paw-operable.  

Don't worry; with the right precautions, you should be fine.
