| My boy Orion just launched himself into a glass door headfirst and I am really worried about him having a concussion. I don't know what made him do it, I let him out to pee before bedtime and he came sprinting back from the yard at full speed and lept headfirst into the door then collapsed in a heap on the deck. I freaked out and ran outside and have checked him over he has not split the skin anywhere and did not squirm away when I was running my hands over him, his pupils are fine and he has perked right back up and seems happy but I am so worried I know concussion onset can be delayed - at least in humans anyway. Has anyone had a dog with concussion? What do I keep an eye out for? Do I let him sleep? It is nearly midnight here so I cannot call the vet right now - I hope I am over reacting but I'm kinda freaking out |

| I know nothing about dog concussions, but it does say online that they can get them.
Brain Injuries
Injuries severe enough to fracture the skull are often associated with bleeding into and around the brain. Brain injuries are classified according to the severity of brain damage.
Contusion (Bruising) With a contusion, there is no loss of consciousness. After a blow to the head the dog remains dazed, wobbly, and disoriented. The condition clears gradually. Concussion By definition, a concussion means the dog was knocked unconscious. With a mild concussion there is only a brief loss of consciousness, while with a severe concussion the dog may be unconscious for hours or even days. When she returns to consciousness, the dog exhibits the same signs as for a contusion.
A severe concussion causes the death of millions of neurons. Recent information indicates that brain cell death does not cease within a few hours of the injury, but can continue for weeks or months.
Did he lose consciousness? Other websites I've looked at say vomiting and lethargy can be signs too. I would keep an eye on him overnight and take him in the morning if you're still concerned. Though I've had my dog do this when he was first learning about glass doors, and he didn't end up having a concussion. He was fine about 30minutes-1 hour later of us keeping him quiet. |

| The blow has to be directly to the skull for a concussion as well, so it can't come from a ripple effect or indirect blow in nearly all cases. Did he hit head on on face first, shoulder/body first?? |

| He hit head first, he leapt with his head down (like in a charge) so his forehead was what hit. I'm not sure if he lost consciousness or not but he was down in a heap and the time I got to him he moved his head to look at me but would not get up. He is moving cautiously now and has had some breakfast etc. He is definitely not his usual bouncy self but he has not been sick or anything and the vet has said just to keep an eye on him so fingers crossed! |

| They've got really thick skulls. Dakota fell out of a cart at Petsmart (headfirst) when she was a puppy...all I heard was a yelp, saw her shake her head a couple of times and I panicked. The Banfield vet told me it takes a lot for serious injury to happen. She shook it off and was fine but I was like you and was very worried and kept an eye on her for a couple of days.
I hope Orion is able to do the same thing and is perfectly fine! |

| Orion seems to be good as gold, he has a bit of a bump on his head so isn't too keen on me touching him right now but other than that I can see no issues with him and he is up to no good again already hooray! The ridiculous thing is that his "best friend" a Briard puppy who is a few months older than Orion did the same thing yesterday! Poor boy split the skin though so he got the cone of shame  |

| I'm glad he's doing great! We had a friend who got an actual concussion this past weekend. It was a mess of a time. |
