| I've been having some trouble with Pippa's pads when we're biking.
I bought some Musher's Secret after having her paws getting pretty torn up after biking one day. It's gotten a little better since, but I can't seem to get them to toughen up. Is this just part of the process? Do they callous over time? I'll wait until they're healed and then the next time we do anything more than walk (running or biking) they're start "peeling" again.
And what's the best surface to bike with her on? My neighborhood is asphalt, but it's so ridiculously hilly, it's not really an option. There's a 6 mile long path near my house that's concrete some of the time, which did the most damage on her pads and then wooden boardwalk the other time. I figured out that if I start from the other end of the path, there's a lot more boardwalk and less concrete. Would that be any better?
Sorry this is all over the place.
Do their paws toughen over time? (She's a year and a half. Kinda figured they'd be decently touch by now.) Does wooden boardwalk sound better for paws?
Thanks! |

| A softer surface like grass would be far better on their paw pads and their joints. I run my sibe on grass mostly when we bikejore, but he does run some on concrete till we get out of our neighborhood. They do toughen up over time but as you said, you'll want to let them heal before taking her out again. _________________ |

| I bike mine 5 times a week on asphalt now without any issues. When we first started we could only go once or twice a week and I'd have to let their pads heal.
It's something you'll have to keep a close eye on, but they will develop stronger pads over time. |

| Thanks everyone for the responses!
We've been taking it pretty easy, only every other day or two and not long distances, and I can already tell that her paws are toughening up a little.
I let her run on the grass when I can, but there aren't a lot of sidewalks here and biking close enough to the curb to let her run in the grass just seems like an accident waiting to happen.
The last two times I've taken her, we've gone to the "Greenway" that I mentioned in the original post and gone the direction that is more boardwalk and that seems to be helping. When I go back to school in the fall, there's a concrete path in the city that has grass all along the side and that'll work really well.
Thanks everyone! |
