Hello, fellow husky daddies and mommies. Let me introduce Ulva (aka Ulvina)... and humble me. She becomes 2 years old in October-November. I don't know her age for sure, since I adopted her as a 2-3 months old puppy from a shelter. More accurately she weighed about 3Kg when I got her on 19/01/12. Now she weighs 24kg and her height is 56cm. I actually wanted a running partner, who would never get tired and always be along or even ahead of me, to keep me motivated. Initially, I didn't look for a certain breed. Most of the candidates were mixes. I found an ad for adopting a mixed breed dog and I was told that he has already found a home, bit before I hung up, this blessed woman added that she was recently hosting a female husky puppy and she was about to put a new ad for her. That day has changed my life forever...
 Anyway, I researched and learned about huskies' stubbornness, independence and wandering instinct. Having motivation and time in my hands, I did my best to train her myself. Not to boast for me or my girl, but she has become a star when it comes to obedience and wits. Especially after her first year (before that she had some flaws). I can now walk/jog/run with her off-leash, without any problems. When I tell her "stop" she stops, when I tell her "Leave it" to not chase/go near something (mostly cats or food) she does so and most importantly when I tell her "heel" she walks/runs beside me. She has excellent recalling and learned some other "gimmick" commands successfully, as well ("turn around", "on your back", "hand", "leg", "talk", "jump"). I have seen trained German Shepherds that are less obedient. On the downside she doesn't like too many caresses, hugs, kisses and sometimes becomes cold and distant - she breaks my heart when she does that! She gets on that high horse of hers and turns her back when I become soft with her. If, on the other hand I change my tone to that of a military-superior's, she immediately becomes another dog.
Is this normal for a purebred Siberian husky? Not that I have any complains, but it troubles me lately after not one but two persons claiming to be experienced breeders, with years of experience, told me that she's not purebred. When I asked them why they believe so, the first one told me plainly: "It is obvious", not having the time to explain further. The other guy told me that she is probably a malamute/husky or Belgian shepherd/husky mix; her ears are more similar to Belgian shepherd's than husky's and that her mask should look like a clover and that this mask of hers is similar to that of a malamute's. I googled and saw many similar looking, purebred huskies. I am really confused. What do these people see on my little girl, that I don't? Not that it matters much to me, I and my family love her wholeheartedly either way. I just need to know that I am not staining my karma with lies when I claim that my black-and-white beauty is a husky and I want to avoid the expenses of a DNA test.

Wow she is beautiful..  I would say she probably is all husky.. I am not and expert by any means..  I got my second husky female lighter color on in the sig  from a shelter and we are not completely she she is all husky but we do not care.
Huskies can look very different the mask are all different.  


She falls right it the standards for huskies.

She is gorgeous! She looks all Husky to me :)Ulva and my Husky Hayden look very similar.

Hayden looks like her twin! A bit bulkier, though as a man should be. What about obedience? Has anyone had any success training huskies to a level, they can be trusted off-leash? I mean walking alongside me as we get past cats, (she loves chasing them, normally) roads with normal traffic, other dogs and other paragons that can disrupt our walk/run.

I can walk Hayden off-leash, but I don't and wouldn't take the chance. It only takes one little thing to go wrong and to grab his attention enough to not listen to me and I just couldn't risk that.

I don't trust Blaze or Kerian off leash at all if one distraction happen they would be gone. Blaze has a thing for cats and squirrels.

Took me a year of rigorous training. But I now have 100% trust in my husky. He earned it little by little.

I have a 100% succes rate with the recall and most other commands. Even in full chase after a squirrel he'll stop dead in his tracks if I call him.

The only time I have him on leash is when for some reason there is a lot of traffic. But I live in a small town and this happens pretty much never.
