| So, my best friend has a lovely little heeler/lab mix, Lily, that they got as a puppy. Unfortunately, they never socialized her with other dogs and now at 3, she has major dog aggression. She is a very good little dog, obedient, welll behaved, protective without being vicious. But it would be nice to take all 3 dogs for walks together. My girls, like most huskies, think every dog is a new playmate, and we have tried repeatedly to introduce them. Very proud of my girls for resisting the urge to pounce or be over friendly- they sat and smiled politely, even let us turn them around to allow Lily a chance to um, sniff things out. But the instant they get within 3 feet of her she is snarling and lunging and trying toattack. She is all muscle and could easily whip my girls with her tail tied between her legs, so the danger is quite real. I know that what she needs is a trainer to work with her. But it isn't going to happen. My friend is rather poor, with two little kids and a baby on the way, and frankly, she just isn't the type to follow through with it anyway. So I am hoping there aree tips you all could pass along for us to try and help Lily at least tolerate being on a walk or tied up at the park while we picnic together, because I feel very bad that it is always "will Lily be there? Oh well then I guess we won't bring the girls." and vice versa. I love Lily, she isn't a bad dog at all. She just has lazy owners. I really want to help this situation if possible. |

| Our Cocker isn't quite that bad, but close. We found a great behaviorist up in Baltimore who has been working with us on desensitizing her, and after a few months we've gotten to the point where we can walk her with minimal reaction towards other people and dogs.
What they need to do with her is ease her in to social settings, give *tons* of praise when she's behaving properly and not reacting, and correct her when she reacts. Our behaviorist recommended a compressed air canister because it snaps the dogs out of the reactions and allows them to refocus on you and calm down. It has been a godsend for Lulu for outside the house, but she's still got a lot of issues to work on inside the house. Our behaviorist also holds monthly pack walks for reactive dogs, and that helps a lot.
Anyway, here are links for 2 different air canisters, you can pass this along to your friend, we have the Pet Convincer:

On the one hand, you become a fierce defender of the ways in which your little one is perfectly ordinary — all the things he or she can do that are just like what everybody else does. And yet, you never lose sight of how absolutely extraordinary that very ordinariness is, how difficult, remarkable and rewarding that fight to be 'just like everybody else' has been."
