I would like to get Loki to a point where he doesnt need to be on a leash when we are outside. Right now he knows his command for come but he just looks at me and keeps going knowing hes not attached anymore. Its frustrating, I went swimming with him at the lake yesterday and i hate having him on a long line! the biggest problem is he get so excited when other dogs are around that theres no stopping him, he will do whatever to go and see them. I was hoping that jogging with me was going to help, i'd love to eventually be able to do it without a leash. Im just frustrated! Any advice would be great thanks.... And i did try the bike thing, but again if he sees a dog i bail insanely hard and have some scars still Sad Treats also dont work at all outside, he just ignore them completely, he will even spit them out! When i go hiking in remote areas i let him off leash because he doesnt go far, and with no distractions he listens better, and its a joy to see him running around

He is a husky, so honestly, you may never be able to take him offleash. A lot of dogs just don't do it. Huskies have a really high prey drive, so things could be going great til he sees that one squirrel that he just has to chase and he's gone, no amount of treats or anything will get him back. You can teach him an emergency word that should get him to stop as soon as you use it, but its not a fail-safe and there could be that one time that he just decides not to listen to you. I wouldn't risk letting my girl off leash except in a offleash dog park.

It's a heated topic for sure.

I would't let anyone tell you " you shoulda got a Lab" but the cards are stacked against you, no doubt..

There's only one instance I've ever encountered (personally) with a husky off leash. And that's one that's about 13 years old. The owner would go on 10+ mile walks with his husky every day since the husky was, like, two... He would carry treats in his pocket while doing it too. It took years and years of dedication and strict training on his part though...

But, mind you, there are over 25 huskies I know personally and that wouldn't fly with a single one of them. I tried it with Stark on a leash, and he would sniff my pocket, if he didn't get a treat, he'd be like, "Oh, grass... I'm going to go sniff it over there!"

You could try the belt leash as well - it would be a lot less inconvenience while jogging, but if he's a typical husky, it definitely will not happen anywhere in the near future (read: years).

I agree with what everyones said. Some huskies can be trained, and it takes a lot of consistency, patience, and years of training. And even thing ONE incident and your dog could be gone. I prefer keeping mine on leash, I use 50ft leashes at the beach and when hiking, and a walking belt when we go walking regularly Smile

Thanks everyone, I use a belt leash when jogging, but i'd like to work on him being off more. He is usually off on my rural hikes with another dog, he always stays close, and now he comes to check in with me which is a new advancment! but still worried so ill stick to the long line for now.
