| I know that grapes are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure...etc.
Link managed to get one off the ground just now...a single, seedless red grape.
Should I be concerned?? Possibly induce vomiting with peroxide in the next hour or so??
I did some research but could not find anything about the amount needed to produce a toxic reaction.
Thanks for the help. |

| For one grape, I wouldn't worry. I do believe it's supposed to be a lot over time.
I had an episode a few weeks ago where I came home to a brand new bunch of grapes on the ground and half of them eaten. Koda sat there with a smile on his face and Hailey was sulking when I walked in. I figured it was Hailey (it's usually her), but because of the amount of grapes eaten, I made them both throw up. I felt awful. Sure enough, Hailey had eaten about 50 grapes and poor Koda lost his breakfast for no reason. Hailey already has major kidney problems, so it was important for us to make sure there was nothing left. _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| Ok, good to hear, thanks. I couldn't find anything online about the potency or quantity.
So you didn't see any signs of sickness at all even with ~50 grapes? |

| I got to her pretty quickly. She puked them all up practically whole... so no. I don't think there was enough, if any, left in her stomach to cause any issues.
The dogs are always a little lethargic after puking (as you would expect), but after that, she went back to normal. _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| Haha, it's funny how they hardly never chew things like that.
Ok, well thanks for the reassurance. I had a pretty good "oh crap" moment.
Cheers. |

| Oh yeah, just for reference and since I got you here, how much peroxide do you use to induce vomiting and how do you administer it? It'd be good to know for any future incidents. |

| It's different depending on whom you ask. In my experience, I find it's best to stick to about 1 tsp per 10 lbs of body weight. So Hailey (45-50 lbs) gets about 5 tsp and Koda (60 lbs) gets 6 tsp. The important thing to remember is that it isn't an immediate reaction. It depends on the dog and how much is actually in their stomach. For example, the day of the grape incident, it had been a few hours since their breakfast. When I gave Koda the peroxide, he puked in about 2-3 mins. He didn't eat the grapes. It took Hailey a good 5 mins to throw up because she had a fuller stomach with the grapes. Afterwards, I make sure they have plenty of water to drink and then I try to give them scrambled eggs after a couple of hours just so they have something easy in their tummies. But the eggs depends on when it happens. The grape incident happened around lunchtime-- so by the time I would have given them eggs, it was almost dinner time, so I didn't. But if it had happened in the morning, I would have given them something to eat around lunch so they didn't have to wait until dinner to have food. These are just my personal preferences. You can always ask your vet for more suggestions. _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| Great, noted, and thank you again I'm gonna jot that down and put it in our notes. |

| The process isn't for the faint of heart either. I would go out to a pet store and get yourself a syringe. It makes administering the peroxide much easier and less messy (peroxide does bleach your clothes if you get enough on them). I'm not going to lie... sometimes I tear up a little watching them throw up... it's the worst feeling in the world knowing I've caused it. I just try and focus on the fact that I would rather put them through this temporary discomfort than for one of them to die. They forget about it soon after though. ETA: And you're welcome Anytime! I should actually make a sticky about the process. You won't be the first one wanting to know. _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| What my parents did a long time ago when we thought are dogs ate mothball that out neighbor threw in our yard on purpose (ya tried to kill my dogs and my other neighbors) we put thr amount of peroxide on a piece of bread and let it soak in. It was pretty easy to get them to eat it too. |

| Yeah, I wondered if you could spike something with the peroxide. Good idea for a sticky, maybe like a Housekeeping 101 sticky with other relevant on-the-spot first aid information that would be useful, especially for newbies with puppies. It could be really helpful. For example, I searched for "grapes" and found nothing in my case but I didn't think to search for "inducing vomiting" or "peroxide" which I suppose, indirectly, would have been relevant. It could have been good to know that there was a Housekeeping 101...ish sticky with referents to this type of information. I think it'd be a really great, efficient resource for us here. | Honestly as long as your dog doesn't eat a ton he should be ok. Shaqua actually likes grapes....she caught one when I dropped it one day. Occasionally I will give her one or two grapes. It doesn't hurt her at all. Now I would never give her a handful or anything like that... I figure it is her version of alcohol. I "poison" myself regularly, she's allowed a grape once every few months or so. |
