So I have just gotten Kronos, he's an 8wk puppy. I have an outdoor line/tie out for him. It runs the length of my back yard (acre lot) but whenever I put him on it, he cries. I feel terrible leaving him alone outside, but I do have to get some work done inside my house (without a puppy underfoot). How long should I leave him out there? I do not have an outdoor small enclosure for him. The yard has sunny and shady spots, and I leave a big bowl of water and a favorite toy for him, but he just cries and cries.

IMHO 8 weeks is far to young to be left alone on a tie out. For one thing it isn't safe, he could really hurt himself, you don't say whether the tether is hooked to a collar or harness, but it doesn't really matter, he could get hurt either way. My friends doberman pulled his back something horrible on a tethered harness! And it leaves him totally exposed to getting injured by another animal.

He is alone, unprotected, and scared. Please don't leave him tied up outside alone. If you need to get work done and can't supervise him, a crate in a room where he can see you is the best thing to do, and the safest! Or wait until someone else is home that can keep him occupied while you work.

Ok, thank you for the advice. I will bring him in. I thought it was crueler to make him stay in his hotter small crate rather than the cooler outside. But I see where he would be scared. I will bring him in while I work.

June said what I was gonna say, you can always get a fan to blow on him as well. Make sure you are taking him out every hr for potty breaks

Yep I do have a fan for him. It's the only one in the house and He gets it! I just felt so bad cause it does get hot in our house, and in the mornings it is nice and cool in our yard. I really did think he would like it better.
As for potty breaks, I swear it is just like a newborn baby, he like needs to pee all the time. Good thing I am a SAHM. haha.

i can feel your pain b/c we have to use a tie out since we rent and dont have fencing around our yard. when she was on the tie out that young i was with her b/c i have neighbor dogs that get loose and arent friendly so i always felt nervous to leave her alone. Rather than leave her in a crate could you use baby gates or make some sort of blocked off area in your house where puppy wont be in the way but can still have some space to play? i usually baby gated my (small) kitchen off and had toys and things to occupy her while i did chores and just peeked in on her to make sure she was fine. if the room is puppy-proofed it could work maybe.

He is not ready to be left alone he just a little thing When we go out of town we take a tie out with us because he likes to try and play with the horses. He only gets put on it if we are outside because he just cries if no one is out there with him and he is a year old.

Thank you for the idea, but I can't 'gate' him in our kitchen because of our layout. It is all open floor plan, so no doorways between dining room, living room, and kitchen; it's all like one gigantic square. haha. The only plus is it is all laminate so easy clean up. But that was the reason for me wanting him outside, he would pee on the floor if I wasn't watching him every second. I still would take him out every hour but, you know puppies.
Meh, I will work around it. Like I said it is easy clean up.

yes its hard to find ways to supervise them and potty train while still being productive. Kiba was especially difficult to potty train and then we had that whole tie out issue too with me being afraid to leave her. Hope you can find some work-arounds. maybe just getting some interactive puzzle type toys (if you dont have any right now) if you need to crate the puppy so they are occupied in the crate. : ) good luck

i use a tie out for blu some times (useually in the mornings so i can drink my coffee and have my smoke while he does his business). to get him use to being out ther go out with him from time to time... for say maybe 5 to 10 minuets at a time, and bring a tennis ball out or something and teach him fetch. he'll enjoy it because he'll see it as a game, it will also keep his mind stimulated and the two of you will get quality bonding time.

as for needing to get work done in the house without the little munchkin acting as a second shadow, i would take his crate and put it in the room your working in.... or atleast within veiw of you. and then do what needs to be done.

I personally dont like the idea of leaveing him out there by him self for any amount of time, given his age... once he is a bit older (say 6 months or so) i dont see anything wrong with giving him some 5 to 10 minuet alone time. as for right now he is too young for it... there's just too many dangers and possible negative out comes for it. crateing him for the tiem you need to work then playing with him after words would be a much better route for both you and him.

Kronos really is a good puppy so far. I worry, because he might turn into a crazed hyper 'teenager' and I will be sideswiped! haha.
Thank you everyone for the support and ideas. I will use the crate more around the house. I mean, really, normally he is just sleeping! I don't know if that is common for husky puppies, but right now, Kronos sleeps like all day. I play with him for 15min at a time, and he's done. hahaha.
My schedule is being His little interactive shadow all day long. Eat three times a day, potty like fifteen times, cause I'm paranoid, and play 15min every hour, and then sleep for like 40 min at a time. rinse repeat. even at night. sigh.
But I love him.

puppies do sleep a ton! you can get a playpen to set up as well so he is not in the crate but not running around.
