Hi I am getting my first husky on friday! She is an 8 month old collie husky mix. I have 2 cats right now, and one is 9 and one is 2. Can you tell me how to introduce them? Thank you
I am soon to be a husky's human, so I am looking for advice from experienced owners. Have you had luck having your husky trained to be "off lead"? I know they tend to be on the mischievous side and like to chase, but can they be trained to walk off leash and be trusted not to take off? I have also read a lot about the prey drive, and that cats and small dogs have the risk of being dinner. Is this common for a well trained husky? I am two cats and am adopting an 8 week old puppy, so I am hoping that having exposure to cats at a young age would reduce that tendency. I also have a lot of family members with cats, where the dog would stay at times, so I don't want them to have to worry about their small animals. Thanks in advance for any helpful tips and personal experiences.
* oh also, do females tend to burn the grass with the urine?
I currently got a new Husky living with me named Koda apparently he was abused by his last owners and I took him in. Anyways I have 2 Cats living in my home space, both I have had since kittens 1 of them around 3-4 years and the other around 1-2. I have read online that Huskys tend to kill cats... which has brought up concerns to me. The dog is tied to a pole in my house(No cage yet as I just got him but plan on getting it soon) with a limited range of roaming. He is 10 months old from what I was told and hasn't bothered to chase them yet, just watches them as they walk around the area. When I hold my cat next to him the cat seems to be bothered a bit trying to hide in my arms but the dog does nothing at all. What I am worried about is my cat tends to wander in his area getting really close. He has went all the way up to his face and behind him with the dog making little to no reaction. When he meets other dogs while walking him outside I can't tell if he wants to harm them but he barks aggressively pulling hard on his leash trying to get to them. He knows how to sit shake and listens pretty well when saying "no" but usually whines about it. My other cat wants nothing to do with him at all he sneakily goes back and forth across the room while the dog sleeps making little to no noise so i'm not too worried about him. The older cat is just way too curious for my comfort... Note.(I have no other rooms to "separate" them but the room they are in is pretty spacious, imagine a living room + a small kitchen)
We live on a farm and we have two outdoor farm cats.
We were blessed with a very well behaved husky puppy. He is 5 months old and we got him about a month ago. He knows, sit, stay, come, give me paw, lay down and is completed crate trained. Even when we go on our walks he is pretty well behaved, very little pulling. Even when we are in town and its very busy he doesn't really approach other dogs or people excitedly. He has been pretty simple to train thus far!
However one of the main issues we are having is that everytime he see's one of the cats he goes nuts. He doesn't bark, but he lunges, pulls and nearly chokes himself out trying to get to these cats. No matter what we do we can't redirect his attention or get him to listen to us and even if we somehow manage to get him walking again, the cats just end up following us and teasing him! It's really frustrating because as soon as he sees the cats, he doesn't focus on anything else, and we just want him to go potty.
Does anyone have an recommendations on how we can fix this?
I know huskies have a very high prey drive, and that its not easy to fix.
I've read some things that say huskies and cats should just never be in a home together because of the husky's prey drive. I did a lot of research on it and spoke with a couple breeders (we were looking around to find a trusted breeder with a process that worked for us) and came to the conclusion we could safely introduce a husky puppy (8 wks) into our home with our two cats (1 yr and 6 mths). I was hoping for advice from other husky owners with cats about how to teach the husky to not chase the cat and to play nicely with the cat.
One of my cats did spend his first 9 months with a 1.5 year old Chesapeake, 7 year old lab, and 8 wk old lab. I'm not so worried about him because he's a scrappy cat who is good about being vocal when he's not happy and knows about dogs and the reality that dogs can't jump on the counter and he can. My other 6 month old kitten on the other hand has never met a dog and runs as soon as him and the puppy get close, inviting the puppy to chase him. I was hoping for advice on how to foster positive relationships between the cats and puppy and prevent any dangerous mishaps in the future.
Hello everyone, I'm new here and I don't know to to start so here it goes I Have a 4 month old DSH cat , and I wanted to adopt a 60 days old husky as well but I was woundering if they would get along together, my cat is socialized with poeple and the only time she has seen a dog is at the veterinary and she wasn't scared when the dog barked at her, not at all she actually didn't even react at all! Do u think they would be fine to live together? And is it good for them to have a companion to play with all the time?
Hey all, I'm you resident crazy bunny lady (among other things) so I thought I'd share a portion of my farm!
Currently I have 11 rabbits - first pair bred because I was an idiot and provided 6 babies I couldn't part with and it's all been down the warren since then! The bunnies I have range from a Silver Fox, Dwarf Lion Head, Holland lops, and a bunch of mutts including my newest rescue a Dwarf Hotot mix~ as it stands they have their own room with a fully screened in 6ft patio that gives them the option of safely going outside if they please as well as a bunny playroom/living area with heater and AC. This summer I am planning on growing a large area of forage for them along with building an enclosure so that they can have a change of scenery. Oh and I should mention all the males are neutered now so there won't be anymore accidentally litters.
As for the dogs - I own a 6 1/2 year old American Doberman female named Rogue who is the house mom to all the animals and the peace keeper to all. She as my first dog and grew up in the city so she's super socialized with humans and all sorts of animals and can do a multitude of random tricks and tasks. Ah...and while she's getting older she's still more active then even my pups! The only thing she really asks for is to be covered up at night because if you don't do it, she'll wake you up and lead you out to the couch to fix the problem.
Cats now! I have 5; a pair of ragdolls, a Persian, and 2 mix breeds. The oldest ragdoll and the Persian were my first pets when I moved out and the doll is my best friend. While each cat is unique - the older ragdoll only drinks water if she sees you pour it, my husbands 16 year old sleeps on the dog, and the ex-feral black cat gives hug - I love them all to death.
Lastly I have recently started raising Nigerian Dwarf goats with ambitions of doing conformation shows and being part of the DHIR program with my does. Currently my mother has 3 goats (2 wethers and 1 doe) who while adorable, aren't registered with the ADGA so they are strictly pets. The herd buck, a young buckskin named Archer, is set to be the herd sire of 3 incoming doelings who are all lovely and come from amazing milking lines.
Ok well, that's a summary of my little farm so far and while I plan to expand thanks to all the land I just wanted to show you all the other kids.
So in my area, we have an issue with feral cats. It's not uncommon to be woken up by a cat fight or loud meowing (probably cat mating calls?). Just got back from a walk with the dogs and noticed about 12 small kittens and a mom cat going into a broken board under someone's house. We probably see 3-4 colonies of kittens every few days. Anyone know what I can do about this? There's so many homeless cats/kittens and I can't imagine this amount of litters every year!! It breaks my heart to see these poor starving kittens wandering around without homes. (Btw our neighbors leave out cans of wet food and bags of kibble all over their property which attracts the cats as well as other scavengers). Should I call animal control? ASPCA? Try to trap and rehome?
My wife and I have two beautiful cats, they are purebred Canadian Sphynx. Super cool info about the sphynx: Its a ressive gene that caused two of some Canadian dude's Devinshire rexes to produce these cats. By breeding two sphynx cats together that's how you get more. They are associated with the TICA -the international cat associate, its like the AKC, CKC, and the UKC (plus all the others) but its for cats apparently. This was back in Toronto in the 60's or 70's. Sometimes when you breed two sphynxes you get a hairy sphynx, most of the time you don't. They have a mix of siamese, devenshire and something else I can't remember.
Unlike regular cats they're super into people and are very affectionate. Due to their lack of fur they aren't meant to be outside cats, rather they are meant to warm their toes by your fireplace.
Allow me to introduce Navi! She's just over a year. When she was still with her breeder (a good, reputable breeder who does all the appropriate checks for cats), Navi got scratched in the eye by her brother playing. Then, as her eye was healing up, she got stuck in a false wall and had to be broken out, her poor eye got drywall dust in it and had to eventually be removed as it was not getting better with appropriate treatment. She was very young, and as for such doesn't seem to miss the eye or even care. She's a regular crazy kitty. Her momma is from Poland, and there was issues with her paperwork so Navi isn't registered with the TICA (though her dad is), but she is a lovely Blue Seal Point....Or as well call her "elephant butt", really its a term of endearment lol!
Navi just after we got her at 12 weeks old. Chatty little baby, loves to talk!
Navi helping Eos destroy our bed, most recently (Eos is hiding in the blankets).
Navi is very very smooth, you can't feel her hair, though if you look really closely you'll notice she has 'peach fuzz' most places, except her nose, it has colouring very similar to a cougar or mountain lion.
Eos is her half sister, they share their father, but not their mothers. Eos is a chatty two eyed creme tort. Or is it cream reverse tort? I don't know, she's creamy and tort like lol. She has a bit more hair (you can mostly feel it not see it), it is very coarse and wirey. We think its because its winter, we'll see when summer hits.
Her meow sounds like she always has a sore throat or hasn't meowed in forever, not the case! The vet says she just has a 'distinguished' meow lol. Together Navi and Eos make up a heard of elephants, as that's what they sound like when they get the cat zoomies and run from one end of the house, jumping over things, to the next.
Eos is staring right at the camera, this is shortly after we brought her home. Navi and her had a few 'choice' words, but figured snuggling was better than arguing.
As you see she's helping Navi destroy our bed, they routinely take the blankets off. Grr.
They both have VERY blue eyes which is common, they're not deaf...Well okay you may THINK they are cause of selective hearing, but I assure you they can hear you...They just don't give a care =P
And now more for your entertainment (Navi is the fat, darker grey one).
-Checkin' out the new sister -Cause that's a comfy way to sleep?! -I must agree Navi does make a comfy pillow (though very temporary) -If we close our eyes she can't tell we're sleeping on her (taken tonight, I laid down and became a cat bed and grooming salon, thanks for the butt in the face Eos!)
I've gone through many posts containing to cats and adult huskies and haven't found any that sounds like our situation.
My fiancé and I recently moved into a one bedroom trailer it's small but was enough room for us and our 3 cats (minus the husky). My fiance, Josh, has had Bolt for 5 years. When he got to big to be in the house (this was all before we met, also when he was young living at his mom's) he put him outside on a running chain. Once we met and moved we discussed bringing Bolt with us. One concern of ours was him eating the cats. He wasn't an aggressive dog and usually got teased on a regular basis by the mini dachshunds his mother owns. He never retaliated.
Fast forward a few months and we made a wild decision to bring Bolt over to just see how he'd react. With leash intact we being him inside. To our surprise he hasn't eaten the cats. It's been a week now. My older cat has stood her ground with him and he leaves her alone. However, if he sees the other cats he wants to chase and sometimes nip.
I do have to say that at times I'm fearful. Bolt isn't aggressive but he is a Husky. I've done a lot of reading on his kind. To be honest, I'm shocked at how well behaved he is inside.
I just need some tips on how to get him to not chase and how to make the cats comfortable. I don't want him to go back to his grandmother's where he'll be put back on a chain and won't have much companionship. I also want my other fur babies to not be scared. My fiance's cat is so afraid she won't come out for food or water (the other cats come out for food and water).
Bolt does try to play with the little kitten (4 months old). The little cats is super playful, just not with Bolt. He'll try to sit next to the cats to be with them. It's like I get mixed signals from everything.
Has anyone been in this situation before? Bolt does get lots of outside time. My fiance and I work opposite shifts. Someone is always home and I walk him every two hours. He has a chew toy and his own spot to lay at.
Okay, so I've searched and read several topics on here about this, and the main thing I have taken away from it was that it IS possible to have huskies and cats living together in harmony, but that it has to be done very carefully. I have two friends in other states who both have huskies and cats living together, and they seem to think it won't be a problem, but I know it will depend on the dog. I also read that the earlier in the dog's life they are introduced the better, but has anyone had success with integrating an older dog into the mix (older meaning 4-6 months old)?
So far we have kept Gaia and the cats in separate rooms, and rotated them at night. During the day while we are at work, we let the cats roam the house, and have Gaia in our sunroom (basically a large enclosed patio). When we get home, we put the cats in our bedroom, and take Gaia for a long walk/run, then give her the run of the house and play with her until we go to bed, when we put her back in the sunroom/crate with her toys. Then we let the cats out into the house again. We figure this will allow the animals to smell each other in the rooms and maybe get used to the scent.
We have a baby gate with a cat door that we are going to put in between the only doorway separating the living room from the back of the house, and are planning to eventually introduce the cats to Gaia with her on a leash, and the cats on the other side of the baby gate from her. My only question, is how long should I wait to do so? So far Stormy (our male cat) has seen Gaia on the other side of the glass front door, and also the glass door to the sunroom when we brought her home for the first time, and expressed curiosity mixed with nervousness.
When Gaia saw him watching her through the glass door leading to the sunroom, she tossed her head and whined, and wiggled her paws around like she wanted to play, and the sudden movement made Stormy hiss and back away slightly. Freya, our other cat, sat way back on a ledge watching from a distance. Both cats have been very wary and are acting slightly skittish when they are sniffing around in the living room. They also have not been as cuddly as they used to be.
Any input would be appreciated. We love all of our furbabies and we want them to get along! We don't want to botch the introduction, or end up with any of them injured. Thanks!
Hi people, im new to this website. I've always like huskies alot . And i really want to get one at the beginning of this summer, but the problem is, i heard something about them eating cats and whatnot. I have 3 cats right now and one dog, and none of them are aggressive at all towards eachother. what can i do to keep my new dog friendly with my cats so they dont get eaten?
Hi Im new to the site and trying to get as much information as i can , Ive always been a fan of the huskys ever since a friend of mine Raced them , Ive always come from a dof family and my wife and i feel the time is right to bring a dog into our family as we both miss having one around. I would love to get a husky puppy as we have a large secure garden and love going out for walks. My only worry is we have a Persain Cat (Aged 2 yrs old she is more like a dog than a cat) but so far have had mixed feelings about Huskys and cats living together , They would never be together without anyone in the house as the house would be split into 2. Any help would be greatly recieved.
We got Neesha from a breeder at 5 months old. She had no socialization with people. She was fed a mix of dry and raw meet. When our family came to get her she was very scared of us but very submissive when we caught her. We thought she would come around to the social part with us. She is now eight months old. When she is in the house she is under the desk at all times or in her kennel. My kids and I can pet her only if we can corner her. We do not chase her around. We have a big yard so she stays outside all day and plays with our other husky. We cannot get her to come inside. She will sit a few feet away and look like she wants to come in but is to scared. We live out in the country close to grandmas. When my kids go to the back yard to play she tries to escape threw the gate. When she does escape she goes to grandmas and catches her cats and eats them. I blame the raw meet diet for that. I know Huskies are by instinct predators. My other husky does not do this when around cats. He will chase them and if he catches them he will kill it from playing with it. But if the cat goes under the porch or up a tree he goes on. Neesha will dig and crawl under the porch and viciously try any way to get at it. On the up side she has never tried to bite me while I am dragging her by the tail out from under the porch. I have worked with her with treats but she is so timid that even if she wants the treat she still wont do what I ask. So we have a few problems. I expected to have to train her but not to this degree. My husband has no connection with her. He wants to give her back to the breeder. He has no time or patience to train her. So it is all on me. I can’t get on to her because that just regresses her. I can’t train her with treats because she doesn’t respond to them. I have tried many different kinds of treats too. She loves treats but wont do anything for them. In the summer time our dogs and the extended families dogs are let go to run by our pond. Neesha will never be able to do that if she goes strait to grandmas house to eat a cat. I am at my wits end and starting to come around to giving her back. I don’t want to though. I don’t know if I have the time or ability to train her to be what we want in a family dog. We are regretting getting her as an older puppy. Its like we adopted a rescue dog. We don’t want to spend money on training her when there are no guarantees. Any advice would be appreciated.
My 2 huskies cornered my cat yesterday (we have always kept them separated by a gate, as my cat was very skittish, and would just run), and the 2 of them were playing with her like a chew toy. They snapped her neck, and she died almost instantly. It was very traumatic to see. In the seconds they got her and killed her, I don't think there was anything I could have done. We knew that this was always a serious risk, but as the cat came first, we tried our best to keep her safe. Not sure how or why she came into the other side of the house, as she never did. I was just wondering if other husky owners have cats, and how they handle it. I am feeling very guilty about the whole situation, wondering if there was more I could have done.
This is my first post, but I've been reading all the threads for the past few months.
We have an 12 week old female husky puppy named Nymeria. So far things are going great! She seems extremely smart and is learning new things regularly.
There is one issue we are having trouble with and I was hoping I could get some advice.
Nymeria likes to chase after the cats any time she sees them. We've told her no and tried occupying her with something else, but her main focus is still to chase after the cats. The cats hiss and paw at her, but it doesn't stop her either.
Any advice on how to curb this behavior? Coexisting with the cats is very important to us since we have one older cat who can't really deal with being chased around.
I am new to the forum. I just had some minor questions regarding the breed. I feel in love with them when a neighbor got one. He was so friendly, playful and beautiful.
I have been researching the breed. I have read that they are VERY active and require lots of attention or they will become destructive. I live in an apartment and I have an 8 year old tabby cat. I didn't know how the breed would do in an apartment and with a cat.
If I choose to get a husky, should I get a female or male? My cat is female and I didn't know if the sex would matter. I want to lean towards a female since previously I have had problems with the boy dogs marking their territory inside.
Also a little about me, I have had TONS of pets from bunnies, cats, rats, dogs, hamsters and turtles. All shapes and sizes. My most recent dog was a male pug who could barley walk around the block. He was a fat guy, and not active at all. I am a runner and would love to have a companion to run with... hence the husky.
Anyways, before I start to really ramble on, if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to comment! Thank you! :D
So as everyone knows Sibe owners cannot always own cats but I just figured I would share a video of our cat Sahara and Anna. We took in Sahara when Anna was around a year old and they get along really well. They play all the time, of course supervised, and Anna knows when she is being too rough. Anna has actually done really well. Anna's attention can always be drawn away from Hara and her prey drive has never been that high. We still know that things could change and we make sure to always watch but here are our babies. Also sorry I couldn't figure out how to turn the video.
I was on a different forum and someone told me my new little puppy will kill my cats. If not now, someday. It has weighed heavily on my thoughts. Anyone with cats who has introduced husky puppy? After almost 2 weeks he will still walk after cats sometimes when they walk or run by. Seems more like he is curious. I also play and pet the cats in front of him with no reaction anymore. Barking at cats stopped after 2 days. After 10 days, he no longer jumps up on counters where they eat. Just maybe 10-15% of time he follows tor chases them and he needs to be redirected which we can with food or toys. When he gets to them, he sits and smells them.
He is only 4 months but he has almost no reaction to things outside beyond bugs. He is obsessed kind of with bugs. However bunnies can run in front of him with no reaction on his walks. He seems less prey drive then my lab who lived with my cats but has also killed small animals outdoors when he was younger. Does fixation happen as he gets older? He also ignores smaller dogs. The only time he raised his hair was when a unleashed dog approached him and was being inappropriate with him. Though nothing bad happened.
Anyways to me things seem good and I do not know if I would ever leave him alone for hours with the cats. He is crate trained and even sleeps in bedside crate.
Anyone else with husky and cats? What is good behavior and what is something that may make me want yo reconsider him? If I am concerned, would anyone recommend that I just have a behavioralist come to my house to evaluate him?
Haha, I swear the squirrels here purposely taunt them. We've got a tree right in the front window that the squirrels just go crazy on. Bode and Myles seem to want to tag team them...
I am new to this forum as I really want to get a Husky having bought a house. I am doing a lot of investigation and reading but was wondering if current owners with cats had tips on what to do from bringing a 8-10 week old puppy into the house? I am into the idea of crate training as well.
For info, there are 4 cats in the house (no plans for anymore though!!!)
Let me start by saying that I am aware the huskies have a large prey drive. And my husky and my cats are only out and about together when I am home. Additionally, the cats have safe places to go to to avoid my little Adelaide.
With that being said, here is my question. I adopted my husky, Adelaide, about 2 weeks ago. She has been in a home with a cat for the last 6 months. I was told that she was not aggressive with the cat but completely fascinated by it. All that is true. So far, it's been pretty good. The only thing I'm working on is that I would like her to get to a place that she will ignore the cats every now and then. Right now, if they move at any time, she has to be right there. I didn't know if there is some aversion training that I can do? When she is finally getting on my last nerve messing with the cats, we take a time out and work on some other training, like Lay Down. Of course, I have to say the cats are driving me nuts too. Because everyone will finally chill out and relax and then one of the cats decides that's the best time to stroll through the living room
I have my black Havanah mix neutered rabbit named Shadow and my friends black and white spayed mini lop mix named Hope. They turned a year old on February 18th.
This is my rescued cat. I believe he's a Manx. He turns 3 on the 10th. His name is Wolfheart, aka Wolfie.
This is my new foster kitty. Her name is Dash and she is four years old.
I was just wondering how odd my Huskies really are. I have one cat named Wolfie and another foster cat named Dash. All three of my Sibes are fine with cats. Phoenix does have a tendency to chase them if they run, but she's gotten "leave it" down very well recently and stops mid-run now. Kumari is fine with cats as well. Phoenix and Kumari are definitely not okay with small animals like guinea pigs or rabbits though. This one time at my friend's farm, Phoenix was in one of the paddocks fenced in a loose. She saw one of the geese had gotten in the pen, chased it, jumped on it's back while it was flying up some, grabbed it by the neck and went straight for the jugular. I'm sure if I hadn't stopped her she would have killed it. Only good thing about it was that I felt better about her surviving if she ever ran away (although she has never run away). Mady, on the other hand, is actually good with not only the two cats, but my two rabbits as well. She used to protect the guinea pig from the other dogs when it was in it's cage. So how odd is this? I know Huskies are not usually good with small animals because they have such a high prey drive. I just want to know how many others have Huskies good with cats and other small animals.
