Kenzi has developed a spot at the corner of her mouth on one side. At first I thought maybe she was just rubbing it raw when she gets chewing intensely on that side but I never actually saw it when it was new and just developing. We've been watching it for about a week now and it doesn't seem to change much. It has a scab-like texture, doesn't hurt for you to touch (only for you to take pictures of apparently, hence the awful pix) and in that week while the main one at the corner of her mouth hasn't done much I think down that side of her mouth there maybe more spots starting. I was wondering if anyone has seen this sort of thing, dealt with it, if I'm just paranoid and it's nothing, or if it could be something? Husband jokingly said herpes.   I didn't think it was a very good joke. I am starting to switch her from some crappy dog food over to grain-free Diamond Naturals and the only outside things she has to chew on is a bone that I gave her if that's gives anyone any clues as to what might have caused it. Going to try to get her to the vet Saturday, but if there's anything anyone knows for me to try before hand it's really appreciated.

Danzig had something similar to this on this chin a few weeks ago. I started washing his food and water bowls more regularly and it cleared up. Not sure if that is related but I've heard they can get "pimples" from dirty bowls.

I will start washing her bowl more and see if that helps. I usually keep it pretty clean but I will step up to cleaning it every day really well just in case.

Did it start before or after you started switching her food? Does she seem itchy or is she licking/biting her paws more often?

She still acts like her normal self, no more itchy or licky than she's always been. It started before the switch and truthfully she's only had the other food once so far so it hasn't been much of a switch yet.

Jasper has come down with something similar but he's spots grew and showed up around his one eye on the backs of his hind legs a little and on his testicles. His skins kind of toughened up and is scaly and scab like, its like REALLY bad dry skin spots. It doesn't bother him either, his legs and testicles itch for a minute or two every now and then but no pain, he also acts like I'm trying to kill him if I try looking at it but normal eating playing, etc. Through a little searching I think he may have a zinc deficiency and that's the cause, so I have started fish oil to try getting a little more zinc in him and it seems to help. I've been emailing a vet who luckily has seen the condition before and describing it she says that what it sounds like he has and she suggested a complete diet change. No grains what so ever, no chicken, and if possible no potato either. I noticed Jasper's spot after he had been given a crap load of treats with oats in them and his food also has oats. I rub a little neosporin onto the spots to moisten them a bit if I can get him to lay down and not freak out on me.

I used neosporin on Danzig's when he'd let me too. That seemed to help. His spot was cleared within a week.

If it persists though of take her to the vet.

There are a couple of good potato, grain, and chicken free foods available if you have trouble finding one. Nutrisca has two non-chicken flavors, and zignature has a whole line of chicken/potato/grain free foods. I got a couple samples of zignature and Dizzy absolutely loves them.

I will pick up some neosporin to put on it. Did you have issues with your dog licking it off? I think that's what Kenzi will do. I will do what I can to get her switched to grain-free a little faster than what I have. She's been on this crappy food for a while since we ended up with a huge bag of it so I don't think it's the kibble unless she just developed the allergy. Her treats are all grain-free except maybe one that I'll have to check. Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. In all the years that I've had dogs I've not experienced a spot quite like this.

Yeah Danzig licked his off but we just tried to rub it in best we could.

Jasper and Bella lick it off too but I try rubbing it in a little and on the mouth he doesn't seem to get it all off its like his tongue skims the corner not full out licks it

Danzig's Mommy we will definitely go to the vet if need be but in her words the test is ridiculously expensive and she doesn't like doing them. She wants me to switch foods when I can and try a new diet for about 4 months then we'll go from there. I'm thrilled to have found her and that she was willing to talk to me with out telling me I need an appointment and thats that. She's also from the school of thought that the first thing you look at is diet and environment so thats what we'll start with.

We have a vet like that too and even the techs are good for answering questions, especially when it comes to ur rabbit (they're really hard to tell when something is wrong). My comment was meant more for Jenn, but I mean that goes for anyone. I tend to follow my gut about situations like these and call the vet if I'm not sure
