Hi All,

Need some grooming advice on my husky. I take Zorro to the groomers and she does a great job usually except for removing a lot of his fur. He lost oodles of fluff when he comes back from the groomers..even though everything looks even. Is that normal? I asked the groomer for a quick bath and blow but she kept insisting that this is the only way to groom a husky. He really looks like a plucked chicken for a month or so after a visit to the groomers. Is it safe to even remove that much fur off a husky? Or even necessary?

I would say it depends on HOW she is removing the undercoat. If she is just brushing/combing with and undercoat rake or blowing out, that's ok. But if she is using any kind of cutting tool, thats a big NO NO. Not sure he should look like plucked chicken after grooming. Also - after coat blow, the dog will temporarily look much more sleek, but again, I question the plucked chicken look.

@zenapupper I second @amymeme --- after grooming he should look about the same without all the fluff - just 'skinnier' You know he's really not, he just doesn't have all the fluff.

Thanks for responding!! Here he is all groomed up and squeaky clean!! I think last time he was looking like a plucked chicken was because he was underweight and a bag of bones right after I adopted him ‍

Doesnt look over brushed to me. He makes me want a real husky.

Kenzi always looks like a ratty blanket during coat blow. I don't take her to a groomer and just do it myself with an undercoat rake and there's always like two weeks she is uneven with dark patches where the undercoat is gone and lighter fluff spots where the undercoat hasn't turned loose yet. No issues as long as groomer isn't using a furminator or similar tool. It looks like an undercoat rake but the tines are sharper and they will cut at the fur as Amy referenced.

Lol…yes he is a cute one and well behaved especially at home. My husband thinks he might have part Mal in him. He weighs 65lbs now and makes me think he is a bit bigger than standard huskies. He really likes his food

I don't see any Mal in him, specifically the ear shape and set, the eye shape and his muzzle all day pure Siberian to me. His weight is not far out of standard for Siberian either I have a very large wooly Siberian. I questioned his status at the shelter when I got him but the director was adamant that he was full Siberian, that he had seen a pedigree before seizing him.

OMG, if we didn't remove all the undercoat possible during Lach's coat blows we'd drown in fuzz. We go in the garage daily with a big shop vac and the undercoat rake. I collect enough undercoat to stuff a mattress. Then you end with the finishing brunch for the less homeless look.
