| Hello here Chelbi7 amd welcome to the forum - I hope that when you say that you're buying a Husky that means sometimes in the future. They're great dogs, but rarely are they good dogs for someone for a first dog.
At 16, I'm guessing that you're living at home - you might want to have a long talk with your parents about the good and the bad things about Husky's. A bored Husky is a destructive Husky - and you've never seen dog destruction until you've seen what a bored Husky can do.
My advice is to read everything about Huskies that you can get your hands (or eyes) on. Read around here - seriously READ what others have to say about getting their new 'best friend' and how they can turn into a nightmare if you aren't prepared. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| Good on you, mate - as they say down under. Husky's are beautiful friendly dogs and at the moment, it seems, as if everyone wants one - - - and believe me, they're not the lab that you can take home and never have to worry about.
Ask questions and we'll see what we can do to help you get ready for a Husky of your own. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| I have a male Alaskan Husky and a female Sibe - when you get ready to buy, I'd think that you're going to find the dog and whether it's male or female isn't going to matter.
Most of my rescues have been female, but in the long run I don't think it really matters. If I were looking for a security dog (GSD, for example) I'd want a male simply because, in my opinion, they're more territorial. Husky's are rarely territorial to any major degree. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| Huskies are a lot of work so before you get one make sure that you or someone in your family has the time to put into one. At 16 you will be facing the decision of going to college in the not too distant future. What will happen to the dog then? Will it stay with your family? Do you intend to take it with you and is your major and course load going to allow for you to put in the proper time for the dog when this happens? This is a good thread compilation of all the threads you need to read before you get your husky. Huskies 101There is also a thread in there on how to choose a good breeder. I have a female. She is higher strung than male dogs I have had in the past. Very head strong. Every dog is different though. _________________ |

| In terms of gender I think that's a matter of preference. I wanted a female because I have a son and i've only had female dogs in my life so they're just my preference, lol. You will have to give him/her a LOT of exercise, that is a definite. These are working dogs with energy to burn. My girl is 4 months old and I walk her once in the morning, once in the afternoon and bring her to the dog park at night when it's cool and everyone else brings their dogs out - usually that does it for her and she'll be out till I wake up to drop my son off at daycare. She is very, VERY friendly towards people and other dogs so i've no worries of her being aggressive but as always you should be cautious. |

| I got my first two Siberian Huskies (both female) when I was 14. It was ideal to get them as a teenager because I still had youthful energy and spent a lot of time with them. My favorite activity was to take them for a run alongside my bike.
I got my third Siberian Husky (male) when I was 22. He wasn't like the typical Husky. He was a couch potato and hated to run. That was fine by me because I liked to watch TV and spend time on the computer.
I got my fourth Husky earlier this year (also male). He's going to be eight months old soon, and he's the typically Husky. He has a lot of energy, loves to run alongside my bike, and always stops to wonder if he should follow a command before he actually does it. He's not destructive, but that's because I exercise him. If he's too energetic, I send him outside to the yard for a bit or put him in his crate to chill.
I like males best. I think they're friendlier and more affectionate. But each dog is an individual (and so are people). I think you'll find your perfect dog and the gender won't matter.
Also, if you can, purchase or borrow a copy of Siberian Huskies For Dummies. That book has an amazing amount of information about the breed, and it's easy to read and understand. |

Al the lab comment made me giggle...only because 9/10 times i COMPLETELY agree with you... the only exception being my girlfriend's english lab compared to Lutsen...holy hannah! Night and day...Myla (lab) is the high strung running around escape artist and Lutsen is the chill easy going one in comparison to the lab. I can however tell when Lutsen gets the wander lust look in his eye when he's with her like "well myla's leading the way whereever she wants to go looks good" but then he see's me or Ryan and once his name is called he retracts...not always right away...they can be very manipulative buggers! |

| I don't think gender matters much unless you believe that a male/female pair fights less or you want your dog to be bigger or smaller via dimorphism.
Most of what you read about huskies is generally true: High energy, intelligent, stubborn, destructive when bored, escape artists, should always be on a leash because they will run away, friendly disposition, shedders, quiet, and sensitive to dog food with grains.
A husky is a dog, dog, not a toy dog. You have to spend time with it. At least an hour a day should be set aside for playing with and paying attention to the husky. Though they are stubborn, they like to learn new tricks and play games.
As a puppy, they will get into everything and keep you up at night like a newborn baby. They play in spurts. Play, potty, eat, potty, sleep, potty, play, potty, eat and sleep, potty, play. That's a typical routine.
The more you pay attention to and teach your husky, the happier and more well behaved they will be.
Good luck on your search. |
