PostSubject: Explosive diarrhea - need recipe for bland food   diarrhea - Explosive diarrhea - need recipe for bland food EmptyMon Sep 28, 2015 1:32 pm

I noticed Red's diarrhea has gotten worse over the weekend and I think it's related to a new treat that we gave her (True Chew chicken - the soft chewy kind). She started getting a mix of solid poop and diarrhea Fri night into Sat. Then only diarrhea yesterday and this morning she exploded twice within 45 mins. No vomiting, no loss of appetite or energy. No blood in stools.

What have folks done at home to treat diarrhea? I researched and most say to fast for 24 hrs (provide enough water during the fast) and then start them on a bland diet until solid stools form. Then slowly transition back to their normal dog food.

What kind of white rice have you used (specific brand)? Types of meat? Or should I stick with canned pumpkin and meat or boiled eggs? Please help....I feel so bad for our girl and I'm sure she's got a sore bum by now.

Pure can pumpkin, boiled chicken breast and regular white rice(Not the minute rice), you can also add in green beans if Red thinks she is starving, eggs are fine as well. Poor girl, hope she is feeling better soon. You can mix everything together, beans need to be steamed, so they are soft and easier to digest. Good Luck!!

Another thing you can try for a quick fix is a banana. They have the same effect as pumpkin. Some dogs prefer one over the other I have found.

Thanks ladies! I have eveything except for the green beans and bananas. If she doesn't take to what I have, then I'll get those items and try them out. Will prep eveything tonight for her first meal tomorrow morning since her 24 hr fast will be done by then.

...now how in the world do I clean up her liquid land mines all over the yard? Lol

You can opt to hose them down? My neighbor uses her hose to wash away stray poops, if I had the problem I would do the same, it should break it down some, and maybe use bleach?

Yeah that is what I was doing before even though it's always said that doggie poops are toxic and you shouldn't let it leach into the soil. But I don't have any other option. Only problem is that the hubby was so gung-ho in storing the hose away this weekend so that it doesn't freeze over. Ughhhhhhh!! I guess I'll have to wait for it to dry out and make him shovel it into Red's mailbox trash can.

Btw we had to replace the mailbox but I reused the old mailbox to store Red's used poop bags in it. I just stood it up so that the lid is facing the sky. That way I don't have to bring them in the house trash can. I like that this makeshift trash can has a lid to keep the stink in and critters out. Just an idea for folks that like to repurpose items.

I heard the same that brown rice is an option but then some others said that brown rice is a bit difficult to digest since it's so hard. I'll just stick with the white rice instead since that has worked for many others. I believe Renee said green beans rather than peas but I would assume peas would work just as well. Red isn't a fussy eater at all....she once stole a spicey buffalo roll off the counter and gobbled the entire thing down before I caught her. We were waiting for her to start shooting flames from her rear end but she was perfectly fine! AND she tried searching for seconds too! Such a brat....lol

Oh I forgot to ask, does eveyone serve the bland food mixture cold or do you warm it up a tad in the microwave? Was wondering if serving it ice cold directly from the fridge would cause any set backs while she's having the soupy poop?

Most animals prefer room temperature, so I would warm it up some. I don't think the temp of food would adversely affect the tummy, but as far as desire to eat it, room temp is best. As far as the peas, if tummy is upset I would stay away from peas, once back to normal by all means go for it. Peas I think has protein and fiber more so than green beans, and it may cause more problems, where as green beans are a little more neutral, and more of a fill up factor. As far as brown rice, I have read that it is harder to digest than white, white overall is just more bland over dark. Hope that helps more.

Eli is having the same loose stool issues. He had been on the Diamond Puppy food from the breeder and a little over a week ago I had started transitioning to Taste of the Wild. They seemed a little softer, but nothing too bad. A vet stool sample came back that he had gotten coccidia so they gave me a three day series of meds that ended last Thursday, as well as Purina Pro Plan Gastroenteric as a "bland food to help firm stool." Since he recommend it, I tried it, but he has been on this for a couple days and I think it is even worse now.
I'd like to try the diets you guys have been talking about. How much of each do you recommend a day?

you would replace the hole meal with the bland diet. for a few days, i usually watch the poop. if its finally sold that's usually when i start the transition back to the normal diet very slowly.
i found a good site for portions and how much to cook http://www.gahpets.com/handouts/bland-diet
hope it helps.
